Though THE ARTISAN was closed between lunch and dinner when Christoph and I dropped by, we thought it would be cool to visit nonetheless because of its innovative concept – being Zurich’s first and only urban garden restaurant. So we dropped by to meet and have an espresso with Luca Tribò, co-founder and front-of-house manager at The Artisan. Though Luca has a background in Media Studies, it was his part-time catering jobs as a student, which led him to pursue a career in the food service sector. He was part of the Team Switzerland catering team at the Olympics in China and upon his return, joined the Prime Tower catering team, before opening his own restaurant in 2015 with chef and long time friend, Mark Tommen. The best way to describe The Artisan would be contemporary-casual. At first I was somewhat thrown off because it’s located on the ground floor of a nondescript office building but the interior is nonetheless inviting; minimalistic-modern.
Their seasonal menu with locally sourced ingredients concentrates on quality. They not only do all of their own baking and make their sauces in-house, whatever they are capable of growing themselves (vegetables, lettuce, berries, mushrooms, spices etc.), is grown and harvested in their urban garden on the large restaurant terrace, located in front of the establishment. As Luca mentioned, “Fresh” isn’t just an ad-slogan at The Artisan.
Their menu is eclectic-modern, nature oriented and all items handcrafted. Their wine list concentrates on artisan and natural wines accompanied by a small but fine craft beer offering… and to no surprise, with mainly regional craft beers.
I look forward to dropping in at a more opportune hour and having the chance to try the food. If you’ve been to The Artisan, please feel free to share your experience below.
